Turkey suffers defeat in Nations League, fans call Montella away

On a drizzly evening in Bursa, the Turkish supporters saw their team in the Nations League come under fire, while the Italian visitors were already leading with three goals after thirty minutes. The stadium rang with whistles as the crowd demanded the departure of head coach Vincenzo Montella.

Italian dominance from the first minute

Italy immediately set an aggressive tone. Alessandro Bastoni headed a corner into the net and, shortly after, Davide Frattesi found a rebound, making the score 0‑3 within half an hour. Francesco Pio Esposito and Michael Kayode combined for the third goal, leaving the Turkish defence with no chance.

Turkish response and brief hope

After the break, Turkey played slightly better, with a quick 1‑3 by Baris Yilmaz who capitalised on a miscommunication between Gianluigi Donnarumma and Matteo Ruggeri. It seemed a moment of relief, but three minutes later Esposito extended the Italian lead to 1‑4 with a header, after Sandro Tonali’s shot rebounded off the post.

Despite the deficit, Turkey continued to create chances; a goal by Yilmaz was disallowed for offside and Kerem Aktürkoglu missed a good opportunity after a cross from Arda Güler. The final result remained 1‑4, a definitive knock‑out for Turkey.

Fan discontent and Montella under pressure

The disappointment was clearly audible from the stands. Fans shouted en masse for the departure of head coach Vincenzo Montella, who was in charge of a team that recently also lost 0‑1 to France. The mood in Bursa reflected a growing discontent with the national team's performances.

The defeat came at a time when Italy itself was still suffering a loss in the Nations League, namely 0‑2 to Belgium under the guidance of Mark van Bommel. This context highlighted the volatility of the competition and the pressure on the involved coaches.
