Villa's European drive against Fenerbahçe in Champions League phase

Aston Villa and Fenerbahçe offered Wednesday a sharp contrast: the English club, which already has six points in the Champions League group stage, dominated the Turkish opponent with an overwhelming performance at Villa Park.

Europa League win as a basis

The Europa League winner came in top form. Nathan Aké started in the lineup and contributed to a game that put Fenerbahçe under pressure already after seven minutes, when Archie Gray fell and the home side appealed for a penalty, but the ball did not hit the spot.

Johan Manzambi broke the deadlock with a shot that changed direction and ended up in the net, giving Villa an early lead.

Jackson’s leading role and the eventual widening

Nicolas Jackson played a leading role: he scored a thunderbolt from the edge of the penalty area and later added a second goal after a combination with Ross Barkley, doubling the score.

In the first half Oguz Aydin hit the post, while Zion Suzuki made two fine saves for Fenerbahçe. After the break Villa remained undaunted; Ibrahim Mbaye was stopped by Ederson, Matty Cash missed just wide, and a missed chance by Mbaye would not prevent a 4‑0.

İsmail Yüksek caused a penalty, which Barkley turned into a goal, after which Romelu Lukaku got another chance, but too late to turn the defeat around.

The score was later made 5‑0 by Barkley, and substitute Tammy Abraham finished with a sixth goal, giving Villa a comfortable victory.

Prince William watched contentedly, while Fenerbahçe prepares for a new challenge against Alanyaspor in Istanbul next Saturday.
