Lukkien urges Groningen star to stay amid AZ tug-of-war

Dick Lukkien, head coach of FC Groningen, publicly advised 22‑year‑old forward Thom van Bergen to remain with the club next season, despite the Dutch striker’s ongoing negotiations with AZ Alkmaar that have so far produced no agreement. Lukkien highlighted the youngster’s 10 goals and five assists in 36 appearances this campaign.

Negotiations between AZ Alkmaar and FC Groningen have been described as very difficult. The Alkmaar side has already submitted multiple offers, yet no contract has been reached.

"If everything goes well, I will keep playing for this beautiful Groningen," van Bergen said. He added that he would still be open to making a move.

During the 2023‑24 season, van Bergen featured in 36 matches for FC Groningen, scoring ten times and providing five assists. His contribution made him a regular starter in Lukkien’s lineup.

"When you look at where he is on the pitch and the expected goals that come from it, it’s really good," Lukkien explained. "He still needs to convert more chances, but if he does, he will become a key player, so I would recommend he stays."

Lukkien also noted that van Bergen could benefit from another year as a youth international before deciding on his future. He acknowledged that AZ is an attractive club for development, and said they will see what the negotiations produce.

The outcome of the talks will determine whether van Bergen remains in the north or joins AZ Alkmaar. Both parties have indicated they will continue discussions in the coming weeks.
