Gary Neville urges Manchester United to sign Felix Nmecha
Former England defender Gary Neville told ITV that Manchester United should target Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, who impressed for Germany at the World Cup, because the German could be secured for roughly £52 million despite a release clause of €80 million activating next summer.
Manchester United have begun a midfield rebuild overseen by Michael Carrick, completing a £35 million signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson. The departure of Casemiro and the expected interest in Manuel Ugarte from AC Milan leave United still in need of another midfielder before the summer window closes.
Felix Nmecha, now 25, began his career at Manchester City before moving to Germany. After three seasons with Borussia Dortmund he appears more mature and ready for a major Premier League challenge.
Gary Neville said after watching Nmecha for Germany, “The more he plays like he did the other night the more expensive he’ll get.” He added, “He looked outstanding the other night, it looked like he had absolutely everything.”
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright praised Nmecha’s all‑round quality, stating, “When you look at him he breaks lines, he gets into the box, he’s got Kimmich to come in and fill in for him. He can play as a No.8 or No.10, we can see he can finish, you can see why teams are interested in him.”
Duncan Ferguson highlighted the German’s attributes, noting, “He’s a very good player, a young player, he’s got a very good right foot, he’s athletic, he can get around the pitch. It looks like he can get in the box, he can defend, he’s a good size, he’s young, you can see why people are after him.”
Manchester United’s reported interest in West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes carries a quoted price of £100 million, while Nmecha’s release clause is €80 million, about £69.3 million, activating next summer. For now the German could be available for roughly £52 million, creating a narrow window before Dortmund gains more leverage.
Neville argues that Nmecha’s profile, price and current momentum could make him one of the smartest midfield acquisitions of the summer. Delaying the move risks a higher price, while acting now offers United a versatile option for the rebuilt midfield.
