Koeman keeps reshaping Oranje attack despite 5-1 win over Sweden

Ronald Koeman confirmed he will continue reshaping the Netherlands’ attacking lineup despite a 5-1 victory over Sweden at the World Cup. The Dutch head coach spoke at length with Donyell Malen during Sunday’s training in Kansas City after Malen’s sixth consecutive start ended in an early substitution. Koeman declined to commit to any fixed forward line after the win, telling reporters: "We must look at everything. We have different types of attackers and can switch at moments we feel are necessary. There are many possibilities." The coach’s willingness to rotate was evident against Sweden, where he moved in-form Malen from his preferred striker role to the right flank and brought on Crysencio Summerville from the bench. The gamble paid off with two goals from Brian Brobbey, who Koeman had identified as a better target against Scandinavian opponents. Koeman, who equalled Louis van Gaal’s record with his 63rd match as Netherlands boss, admitted his substitutions against Japan had backfired but vowed to keep making bold changes. "This one is on me. You have to take it like a big man," he said after the Japan defeat. Brobbey’s inclusion paid immediate dividends, with the striker scoring twice against Sweden. Koeman had already decided on the switch before the match, seeking a different profile to Malen. "After the first group game I had Brobbey in mind because against the Scandinavians I thought we needed a different type of striker," he explained. The Dutch coach refused to declare his team settled, adding: "As a coach I know substitutions work out one way or another. It depends on the match and the players’ form." Koeman’s rotation policy was also on display at Euro 2024, where the Netherlands reached the semi-finals while starting a different right winger in nearly every game. With qualification for the knockout stages already secured, the focus now shifts to the final group match against Tunisia. The North Africans have lost their first two games 5-1 to Sweden and 4-0 to Japan, easing pressure on Koeman to field his strongest XI. Thursday’s clash at Kansas City’s open stadium kicks off at 18:00 local time under clear skies and 23°C, conditions Koeman described as ideal for attacking football. Malen could rediscover his scoring touch against Tunisia, while Summerville’s energetic displays have earned him a claim on a starting berth alongside Brobbey and Cody Gakpo. Koeman now has additional options including Noa Lang, Justin Kluivert, Memphis Depay, Wout Weghorst and Guus Til, giving him a broad palette of attacking talent to deploy.
