Liverpool appoint Andoni Iraola as new manager ahead of Newcastle opener

Liverpool will begin the new Premier League season in two months with Andoni Iraola as their manager. The Reds travel to Newcastle United for their opening fixture. Iraola replaces Arne Slot, who secured the Premier League title in his debut season at Liverpool. Iraola’s appointment follows his successful tenure at AFC Bournemouth, where he guided the club to European football for the first time in their history. The Spaniard arrives at Anfield after making a significant step up from the Championship side. Liverpool’s board have expressed confidence in Iraola’s ability to deliver both style and results. Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison exclusively told Anfield Index that the club made the right decision. Hutchison described Iraola as the ‘perfect fit’ for Liverpool. He praised the board’s choice, stating that Iraola aligns closely with Jürgen Klopp’s tactical approach. Hutchison also dismissed comparisons to Xabi Alonso, who became Chelsea manager this summer. He argued that Alonso’s preference for a back three would not suit Liverpool’s style. “He likes to play a back three, which suits Chelsea, but I’ve never seen Liverpool play a back three,” Hutchison said. The former midfielder highlighted Bournemouth’s entertaining performances under Iraola. He contrasted this with Liverpool’s perceived dullness last season. “Liverpool were so dull to watch last season, whereas Bournemouth were absolutely outstanding,” Hutchison added. Liverpool fans now expect a more dynamic style under Iraola. The club has already completed deals for Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Muñoz this summer. Further squad reinforcements are anticipated before the transfer window closes. Iraola’s first competitive match in charge will be the Premier League opener at Newcastle United. The fixture is scheduled for two months’ time, marking the start of Liverpool’s title defence.
