Liverpool open to selling Cody Gakpo this summer, says journalist

On the Media Matters podcast recorded for Anfield Index, Dave Davis and David Lynch discussed reports linking Tottenham Hotspur with Dutch forward Cody Gakpo and suggested Liverpool could be open to selling him this summer. The conversation highlighted the club’s willingness to consider offers under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

Lynch said he was taken aback by the internal response, recalling his own words: “I was really, really surprised, I’ll be honest, when I kind of had a conversation about this just before I kind of went away.” He added that the reply he received was, “well, no, we could sell him.”

He further explained that Liverpool would accept any offer deemed good enough, stating, “If an offer on the table comes in that he’s good enough, then Liverpool will a hundred percent accept it.” This indicates a potential readiness to part with the forward.

Lynch defended Gakpo’s season, admitting he initially thought the Dutch international “had a shocking season, don’t get me wrong, I thought he was really, really poor.” He then noted that Gakpo was not the only attacker to perform well, saying, “Was he the only Liverpool attacker who played that well last season? He wasn’t the only one.” Lynch also recalled Gakpo’s contribution during the Premier League title‑winning campaign under manager Arne Slot.

Discussing Iraola’s impact, Lynch argued that the new coach could unlock more from the forward, commenting, “I think Iraola can get a lot more out of him.” He highlighted Gakpo’s physical attributes, adding, “He’s a big lad, he can hold people off.”

The podcast also referenced reports from Fabrizio Romano about Tottenham’s interest, with Davis noting the possibility of a deal. Lynch observed that any sale would most likely involve a Premier League club, remarking, “The likelihood is that if he does go it’ll be to a Premier League club.”

Lynch suggested that if Gakpo departs, Liverpool’s long‑standing interest in Bradley Barcola could become relevant, stating, “That feels like it’s not taking too huge a leap to say that’s a big possibility to see Gakpo go and Barcola come in.”

Overall, the discussion made clear that under Andoni Iraola, Cody Gakpo’s future at Liverpool remains one of the summer window’s most intriguing storylines.
