Mansfield Town sign veteran striker David McGoldrick on one-year deal
Mansfield Town have secured veteran striker David McGoldrick on a one‑year contract, with the 38‑year‑old turning down an offer to stay at League One rivals Barnsley and moving to the One Call Stadium after netting 18 goals in 41 appearances for the Bees.
The 38‑year‑old McGoldrick joins Mansfield Town as his 12th club in a 22‑year professional career. His previous spells include Bournemouth, Ipswich Town, Sheffield United, Southampton, Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Notts County.
At Barnsley, McGoldrick recorded 18 goals from 41 league appearances in a single season. He declined the club’s offer to remain, opting for the move to the One Call Stadium.
Mansfield’s manager Nigel Clough said he was “absolutely thrilled” to secure a striker with an “impeccable track record”. The former Republic of Ireland international brings nearly 200 goals in close to 680 matches.
“The quality that he possesses in the final third was the main reason we pursued him,” Clough told the club website. He added that the signing, together with Tyler Roberts, expands the options alongside Rhys Oates and Will Evans.
Clough noted that the assessment at the end of the season highlighted a need for a little difference in the final third. The permanent arrival of Tyler Roberts and now David McGoldrick gives the Stags good attacking options.
McGoldrick began his career at Notts County, the club where he emerged as a youngster, before moving on to higher‑level teams.
