Michael Carrick faces midfield overhaul at Manchester United
Michael Carrick took over Manchester United as interim manager in January and secured a third‑place finish that guarantees Champions League participation. Ruben Amorim was slated for a three‑year spell but lost his job mid‑season after criticising the club’s owners.
Carrick’s early impact included wins over Manchester City and Arsenal, followed by a home loss to Leeds United after a 2‑2 draw at Bournemouth. United recovered with a large victory over Chelsea and a 3‑2 win against Liverpool, their two biggest tests of the campaign.
Ederson is close to joining Manchester United as Carrick’s first summer signing. Casemiro will depart on a free transfer and Manuel Ugarte’s future remains uncertain, prompting a need for additional midfield options. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson tops the shortlist, while Manchester City leads the race for the England international.
A left‑sided recruit is expected to support Luke Shaw, and a player may be added to back centre‑forward Benjamin Sesko. Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho will leave alongside Casemiro, and the club is open to offers for Andre Onana and Marcus Rashford.
Joshua Zirkzee and Manuel Ugarte have yet to make an impact, leaving their futures in doubt. Speculation also surrounds Mason Mount’s next move.
Under‑21 award‑winner Tyler Fletcher and Under‑18 award‑winner JJ Gabriel are in line for pre‑season minutes, with Shea Lacey, Jacob Devaney, Dan Armer and Jim Thwaites also likely to receive opportunities.
Manchester United will begin preparations for the 2026‑27 season by facing Wrexham in Helsinki before the World Cup final concludes.
