Portugal includes late Diogo Jota as honorary 27th World Cup squad member
Portugal’s 2026 World Cup squad lists the late Diogo Jota as a 27th honorary player, a decision announced by coach Roberto Martínez on 17 June 2026. The team will commence its tournament in Houston, and the inclusion is meant to honour Jota’s memory.
Jota helped Portugal win the Nations League, appearing as a substitute in the final that Portugal secured after a penalty shootout against Spain. Roberto Martínez later said, "Diogo is our light," emphasizing the desire to fulfil his dream of winning trophies with Portugal.
Liverpool’s club channels posted Jota’s final interview, in which he praised the Premier League title as a “great achievement for that little boy from Gondomar.” He had previously spoken of his ambition to debut at a World Cup before his life was cut short.
Scotland’s Andy Robertson opened his season with a 0‑1 victory over Haiti, receiving an emotional letter from Rute Cardoso, Jota’s widow, beforehand. He said the letter reminded him that Diogo would be with him in thoughts and steps on the field.
Midfielder Ruben Neves took over the number 21 shirt for the national side as a tribute to his late friend. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro supplied special armbands, and midfielder Vitinha confirmed the squad will wear them during matches.
In the Houston dressing room an empty seat and Jota’s shirt will symbolize his presence for the team. Martínez added, "He wanted to win the World Cup, so the responsibility now lies with us," referring to fulfilling Jota’s dream.
The story was reported by Bob Hermus. He covered the development of the squad’s tribute to the late forward.
