Saibari scores in 70 seconds as Morocco beats Scotland

Morocco defeated Scotland 1‑0 at the World Cup when Ismael Saibari netted after just 70 seconds, the quickest winning goal ever recorded in the competition. The goal broke Scotland’s record for earliest concession in a major tournament, previously four minutes against Paraguay in 1958 and Brazil in 1998.

Saibari's strike set a new benchmark for speed, eclipsing the previous record of a third‑minute winner by England against Paraguay in 2006. The goal arrived 70 seconds after kickoff, establishing the earliest decisive goal in World Cup history.

Scotland have now lost 17 of their previous 19 matches against nations ranked in the top six of the FIFA world rankings, managing only one draw in that span. In their last ten encounters with such opponents, they have been beaten nine times, with a single draw.

Morocco completed 601 passes during the match, the highest total by an African side in a World Cup game since records began in 1966. The possession dominance contributed to their control of the encounter.

Scotland’s starting eleven amassed a combined 609 international caps, the highest total ever fielded by the nation in a single match. The experience did not prevent the early concession.

Morocco’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, aged 18 years and 260 days, became only the fourth African player under 19 to start multiple World Cup matches. The previous players are Rigobert Song for Cameroon in 1994, Salomon Olembe for Cameroon in 1998, and Bartholomew Ogbeche for Nigeria in 2002.
