Sunderland pursue permanent deal for Lutsharel Geertruida

Sunderland are in talks to sign 25‑year‑old Dutch full‑back Lutsharel Geertruida permanently from RB Leipzig this summer, with his current contract at the German club running until summer 2029. He featured in 28 league matches last season without scoring or assisting.

During his loan, Geertruida appeared in 28 Premier League matches for Sunderland, delivering solid defensive displays. He did not register a goal or an assist in those league games.

In the Netherlands, Geertruida is regarded as one of the most talented full‑backs. He can operate as a right‑back or slot into central defence when required.

His style features timely tackles, quick interceptions and a readiness to clear the ball under pressure. Coaches note he still needs to add more goal‑creating contributions to his game.

At 25, Geertruida is entering his peak years. Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris expects him to challenge for a regular first‑team place at the Stadium of Light next season.

Le Bris argues the defender will aid the Black Cats in competing on multiple fronts. He described a permanent move as beneficial for both player and club.

Sunderland must submit a convincing offer before Geertruida’s contract with RB Leipzig expires in the summer of 2029. Securing the Dutch full‑back this off‑season would solidify their defensive options.
