Wouter Vrancken takes over Hearts, Hake out of race
Belgian coach Wouter Vrancken has been appointed as the new head coach of Scottish Premiership side Heart of Midlothian, confirming the club’s decision after dismissing René Hake and Maarten Martens as candidates. Vrancken, who previously led Sint‑Truiden to a European spot, signs his first overseas role.
In recent weeks Vrancken was linked with several clubs, and through his good relationship with technical director Devy Rigaux he also came under consideration at Feyenoord. He was on the shortlist before the Dutch side appointed Giovanni van Bronckhorst as manager. The appointment at Hearts therefore marks his first foreign head‑coach role.
Vrancken succeeds Derek McInnes, who departs Hearts after a strong season. McInnes is set to take over at Rangers, leaving the Edinburgh side to rebuild under Vrancken.

Hearts finished the previous Scottish Premiership campaign in second place, narrowly missing the title after losing a decisive match against Celtic. The club now faces a double‑leg tie with Sturm Graz in the second qualifying round of the Champions League. Earlier in the hiring process Hearts also evaluated Maarten Martens and René Hake. According to Scottish media, Hake – a former assistant to Robin van Persie – was initially the frontrunner for the Feyenoord job before Vrancken was selected. Vrancken’s résumé includes successful spells at KV Mechelen, KRC Genk and STVV. His most recent tenure at Sint‑Truiden earned particular praise after guiding the club to a European qualification spot. The Belgian’s track record of strong performances was a key factor in Hearts’ decision to appoint him.
