2027 contract blocks Al-Hilal's push to offload Benzema

By 4All Football Editorial ·

The 2027 expiry of Karim Benzema’s contract is at the centre of a standoff with his Riyadh‑based club Al‑Hilal. The French striker has refused to depart the Saudi Pro League (SPL) side despite the club’s attempts to force him out, SPORT reports.

Benzema joined Al‑Hilal on a free transfer in January after moving to the SPL in 2023. He arrived from Real Madrid, ending a glittering spell with the Spanish giants.

Before the surprise move, the veteran spent two and a half seasons with Al‑Ittihad. His time in Saudi Arabia had already spanned multiple clubs before the Al‑Hilal switch.

Al‑Hilal now wants to ship him off before the new season begins. The club aims to free up one of its limited foreign‑player slots.

Benzema has made clear he has no interest in leaving unless compensated. He has turned down every proposal presented to him this summer.

The club even explored sending him to a newly promoted SPL side, but the idea was promptly rejected. His refusal leaves Al‑Hilal searching for a solution that satisfies both parties.

Benzema says he would only exit if Al‑Hilal pays the full salary owed for the final year of his contract. That payment would render him a free agent able to choose his next club without restrictions.

Al‑Hilal’s dilemma highlights the broader challenge of managing high‑profile foreign talent under the SPL’s limited foreign‑player quota. Clubs must balance star power with roster rules, a tension increasingly evident across Saudi football.
