Aston Villa's €70m gamble on Reijnders tests Emery's ambition

🇬🇧
Aston Villa have tabled a €70 million offer for Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, as the English club looks to capitalise on the uncertainty following Pep Guardiola’s departure from the Etihad. The bid, reported on X, signals Villa’s intent to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new season. Reijnders arrived in Manchester from AC Milan last summer for £45 million. He has recorded seven goals and eight assists in 50 appearances across all competitions. By the business end of the 2025/26 season he was out of favour, warming the bench for nine of Guardiola’s final fourteen Premier League outings. Despite limited minutes, his contribution numbers remain respectable. Reijnders is currently starring at the 2026 World Cup, showcasing his creative flair on the global stage. He featured as number 14 for the Netherlands in the Group F match against Tunisia at Kansas City Stadium on 25 June 2026. Unai Emery’s tactical set‑up values elite ball progression, and Reijnders offers that by drifting from a left‑sided central role into the final third. The Dutch midfielder acts as a box‑to‑box engine, unpicking stubborn defences with quick, incisive passes under pressure. The physicality of the English game still catches him out, especially when placed in a deep double pivot against high‑pressing, hard‑hitting sides. Emery would need a robust, heavy‑tackling anchor behind him to balance his creative instincts. Villa’s recruitment team could consider alternatives at roughly half the price, such as Johnny Cardoso at Atletico Madrid, who would add defensive stability without breaking the bank. Quinten Timber, a powerful playmaker, also presents a less costly option for the midfield. Spending the entire summer budget on Reijnders would be a massive gamble, as the €70 million fee targets a player who has struggled to secure a regular starting place at City. The club risks forfeiting the chance to acquire three top‑tier players by committing to a single reclamation project.
