Barcelona activate €1.5m option for Hamza Abdelkarim
Barcelona have activated a purchase option for Hamza Abdelkarim, costing around €1.5 million plus variables, making the 18‑year‑old a permanent player. The club view the signing as a low‑cost developmental bet rather than a guaranteed starter.
Hansi Flick, the Barcelona manager, is described as willing to trust Abdelkarim and give him a chance. Pre‑season will serve as a real audition for the teenage striker.
Barcelona’s current attack features wide players such as Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, but lacks a natural penalty‑box striker. Abdelkarim offers a forward who focuses on occupying centre‑backs, attacking crosses and providing a target in crowded matches.
Abdelkarim has been called up by Egypt for the FIFA World Cup, giving him international exposure ahead of the club season. Training with senior internationals, including Mohamed Salah, could boost his confidence and mentality.
Barcelona plan to assess Abdelkarim during pre‑season and grant occasional first‑team minutes as he develops. Flick does not consider him a headline signing, but a developmental No. 9 with potential long‑term value.
