Barcelona's €100m hope clashes with Atletico's €500m barrier

🇪🇸

Atletico Madrid have set a €500 million release clause on forward Julian Alvarez, effectively blocking Barcelona’s pursuit. Alvarez, who submitted a transfer request, believes the club promised to let him leave if an offer of €100 million materialises, a claim that fuels the summer’s biggest transfer saga.

Julian Alvarez remains a top target for Barcelona this summer. The Argentine striker voiced his desire to depart after Argentina’s match against Cabo Verde.

According to SPORT, Alvarez operates under the belief that Atletico made a clear commitment to honour a €100 million offer. He publicly hinted at his wish to leave, a calculated tactic to keep Barcelona interested and pressure Atletico.

Barcelona benefits from Alvarez’s public stance, needing a visible push to break Atletico’s resistance. The Catalan club’s initial bid was around €90 million plus variables, structured in instalments.

Atletico’s CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has cited Real Madrid interest to raise the asking price, insisting the full €500 million clause must be met. Gil Marin publicly suggested Barcelona cannot afford the operation, highlighting the club’s financial limits.

Atletico does not consider Barcelona’s €90 million offer sufficient and remains firm on the €500 million clause. The episode underscores how release clauses and rival clubs’ interest can inflate asking prices, as seen with Atletico’s reference to Real Madrid and Barcelona’s €90 million bid.
