Barcelona should consider Lautaro Martinez for striker role
Barcelona are hunting a new No.9 after Julian Alvarez emerged as priority target. The club’s analysis suggests adding Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez to the shortlist.
Julian Alvarez is praised for his youth, versatility and intensity, and for already adapting to La Liga. Atletico Madrid rejected Barcelona’s initial bid and his contract runs to 2030, making the move difficult.
Lautaro Martinez finished the Serie A campaign with 17 goals and six assists in 29 matches for Inter Milan. The Argentine No.9 has improved multiple facets of his game and now offers a classic finisher’s profile – a presence in the box, ability to attack crosses and pin centre‑backs.
DataMB data shows Martinez outperforms Alvarez in non‑penalty goals, expected goals, conversion rate, aerial impact and touches inside the box, while Alvarez leads in creative and duel metrics. Martinez is Inter’s captain, bound until 2029, so negotiations would be tough, but at 28 he brings European experience and can fill Robert Lewandowski’s boots.
Although Alvarez may suit Hansi Flick’s high‑pressing system better, Barcelona should at least add Martinez’s name to their board. Photo by Marco Luzzani.
