Belgium face must-win against New Zealand to secure World Cup last-16 spot

Belgium’s World Cup last-16 hopes now depend on beating New Zealand in their final group match. A 0-0 draw with Iran and Egypt’s win over New Zealand have left Roberto Martinez’s side in a precarious position. With five points, Belgium could still finish second if they beat New Zealand and Iran fail to beat Egypt. Goal difference and goals scored would then decide the top two places. Belgium would need to win convincingly to secure the best possible scenario. If Belgium finish second, they would face the runner-up of Group D in the last 16. Thibaut Courtois warned that a second-place finish would mean a trip to Dallas, followed by a potential clash with Argentina in the round of 16. A draw against New Zealand would leave Belgium with three points. They would still need Egypt to beat Iran to stand a chance of finishing second, but Iran currently holds an advantage in goal difference after drawing 2-2 with New Zealand. Finishing third with three points remains possible but uncertain. Belgium would then face either France, Norway, Canada, or Switzerland in the knockout stages, depending on other results. A third-place finish could still lead to a rematch with Roberto Martinez’s Portugal in the round of 16. With just two points, Belgium’s chances of advancing would be slim. Even if Egypt beat Iran by a large margin, Belgium might still finish fourth and be eliminated. The margin for error has vanished after two matches. Courtois stressed the team’s desire to avoid leaving Seattle. Finishing second would send them to Dallas, while a third-place finish could take them to New York or Vancouver. The logistical impact is as much a factor as the sporting one. Belgium’s final group match against New Zealand kicks off at 20:00 local time in Auckland. The result will determine whether they advance or face an early exit from the tournament.
