Bruno Guimaraes' impact: the pulse that steadied Newcastle United

🇬🇧

In a season where Newcastle United slipped to 12th in the Premier League, Bruno Guimaraes emerged as the Magpies’ player of the year, finishing as the club’s top scorer with nine goals and proving indispensable to Eddie Howe’s side throughout the campaign.

Guimaraes worked closely with the coaching staff to push further up the field and anticipate where the ball would fall inside the box. He opened the scoring against Nottingham Forest, Burnley, Tottenham and Crystal Palace, securing early leads. Those four wins contributed ten points from a possible twelve, underpinning Newcastle’s modest points haul.

His mentality shone with late strikes at St James' Park, including a 90th‑minute winner against Fulham. He also netted a stoppage‑time penalty equaliser versus Leeds United. Newcastle went on to win that topsy‑turvy match.

Although he missed a chunk of the season through injury, Guimaraes still ranked among the league’s top five for defensive line‑breaking passes, recording 46. He also placed in the top five for through balls, delivering 21 of them. These figures underline his influence despite limited availability.

Guimaraes led Newcastle in passes made under high‑intensity pressure, tallying 998. The statistic illustrates his willingness to shoulder responsibility in tight phases.

Season ticket‑holder Adam Stoker praised Guimaraes’s bond with supporters, recalling his emotional reaction after the 2025 EFL cup final and a heartfelt post‑match interview. Stoker added that only Alan Shearer could be placed in the same stratosphere as Guimaraes in terms of rapport with fans.

Newcastle are keen to retain Guimaraes amid reported interest from Arsenal.
