Canada searches for Koné replacement after World Cup injury setback

Canada’s historic 6-0 win over Qatar at the FIFA World Cup marked its first-ever tournament victory, but the celebrations were overshadowed by the loss of midfielder Ismaël Koné to a broken leg after a reckless tackle by Qatar’s Assim Madibo in the second half. Koné underwent surgery at Vancouver General Hospital, ruling him out for the remainder of the World Cup and beyond. The injury leaves Canada without one of its most influential players just days before a must-win group-stage finale against Switzerland on June 25. Canada needs only a draw to secure first place in the group and advance to the round of 32, with a potential round of 16 match in Vancouver. Coach Jesse Marsch confirmed Koné’s absence weakens the team tactically and physically. “From a talent and tactical perspective, it weakens us in the tournament,” Marsch said ahead of Friday’s training session. Koné, a physical box-to-box midfielder, had formed a key partnership with co-captain Stephen Eustáquio under Marsch since 2024. His ability to drive with the ball and distribute possession made him irreplaceable in central midfield. Nathan Saliba, a 22-year-old Quebec native, stepped in after Koné’s injury and scored a 20-yard free kick in his first minutes on the pitch, sparking a 4-0 lead. Saliba, who plays for RSC Anderlecht in Belgium, celebrated by holding up Koné’s jersey. Saliba described the emotional challenge of replacing his friend: “It was very challenging. It’s not easy when your friend goes out like this, and then in a moment where everybody is saddened, you need to come in and be ready for your team.” Saliba has scored three goals in 16 appearances for Canada under Marsch. Marsch highlighted Saliba’s physicality, passing, and mobility as key attributes, though he acknowledged the team will need to adapt without Koné’s ball-carrying ability. Marsch also has other options: Niko Sigur, a versatile youngster capable of playing fullback or midfield; Mathieu Choinière, a midfielder known for through balls; and Jonathan Osorio, a 91-cap veteran and experienced workhorse. “Choinière brings work rate and intelligence, Osorio brings experience, and Niko brings a little bit of all of it,” Marsch said, outlining the tactical flexibility available to him.
