Curaçao faces tough group in CONCACAF Nations League draw
Vandaag Curaçao learned the composition of its CONCACAF Nations League group, confirming five opponents that will decide its fate in League A. The draw pairs the island side with Costa Rica, Haïti, Trinidad and Tobago, Nicaragua and the Dominicaanse Republiek, while the competition also serves as qualification for the Gold Cup 2027.
The draw was conducted immediately after the WK 2026 in the Verenigde Staten, Canada and Mexico, and Curaçao entered League A with the possibility of meeting the United States and Canada. Ultimately the lotting linked the team to the five nations listed above, shaping a demanding schedule for the upcoming season.
Curaçao’s group now includes Costa Rica, Haïti, Trinidad and Tobago, Nicaragua and the Dominicaanse Republiek. These five nations will contest the first four matches of the Nations League campaign, each vying for a place in the next stage of the competition.
The opening four fixtures are set for the first international window of the 2026/2027 season, running from 21 September to 6 October. During this period the teams will play each other in a round‑robin format, with points determining the final standings.
Performance in the group carries direct Gold Cup implications: the top two finishers advance to the CONCACAF Nations League quarter‑finals and secure automatic qualification for the Gold Cup 2027. The third‑ and fourth‑placed sides move into the play‑offs, keeping their tournament hopes alive.
A fifth‑place finish forces Curaçao into a relegation battle to retain its League A status, while the sixth‑placed team is relegated outright. The stakes are therefore high for every point earned in the opening matches.
Since the tournament’s inception in 2018, only two nations have lifted the CONCACAF Nations League trophy. The Verenigde Staten claimed the first three editions, and Mexico captured the most recent title, underscoring the challenge Curaçao now faces in a historically dominated competition.
