Deniz Undav’s brace lifts Germany past Ivory Coast at World Cup
Deniz Undav’s two goals in the final 20 minutes secured Germany a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in Toronto on Saturday. The Stuttgart striker, introduced as a substitute, equalized eight minutes after replacing Jamal Musiala before firing in the winner in the 87th minute.
Germany trailed for 60 minutes after Franck Kessie’s tap-in from Yan Diomande’s brilliant left-wing run put Ivory Coast ahead. Nagelsmann’s tactical switch brought Undav, Nadiem Amiri and Jamie Leweling on, and the change turned the game.
Undav’s first goal came from a Felix Nmecha pass, while his second followed a sharp turn inside the box. The result keeps Germany level on points with Ecuador in Group E with both sides now having played two matches.
Ivory Coast’s Yan Diomande tormented Germany’s defence throughout the first half. His 11 box entries included the assist for Kessie’s opener, a goal that briefly silenced the 43,036 crowd at Toronto Stadium.
Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made a crucial save late on to preserve the lead. The win follows a nervy performance that saw Die Mannschaft booed by home fans before Nagelsmann’s substitutions.
Netherlands hammer Sweden 5-1 to set World Cup record
Netherlands continued their strong start with a 5-1 demolition of Sweden in Houston. Cody Gakpo scored twice, while Brian Brobbey’s introduction transformed their attack. The Dutch now lead Group F with one match remaining. Emerse Faé’s Ivory Coast side showed resilience but lacked composure in possession. Their first shot on target came in the 30th minute, a reflection of their cautious approach against a higher-ranked opponent. Undav’s performance has reignited debate over Kai Havertz’s starting role. Nagelsmann may now opt to pair both strikers against Ecuador in their final group game.Dutch media hail 5-1 World Cup win over Sweden, global shock at Koeman’s side
Diomande’s display earned plaudits despite the defeat. The RB Leipzig defender’s link to a reported Liverpool move this summer adds further intrigue to his tournament. The World Cup resumes Sunday with Ecuador vs Curaçao at 8 p.m. ET and Tunisia vs Japan at midnight ET.
