Driessen questions Koeman's Aké pick after 3-1 win
Netherlands beat Tunisia 3-1 in their World Cup group match, yet coach Koeman’s decision to start defender Nathan Aké sparked criticism from former international Valentijn Driessen, who argued the Dutch side should have given Jorrel Hato his first World Cup minutes.
Mike Verweij praised Aké’s performance, saying the defender could be placed and still play effectively. He noted that Tunisia defended with eleven men behind the ball, making the defensive task harder. Verweij also highlighted that this was Aké’s first start in a World Cup.
Verweij added that Aké helps younger players, pointing to his 61 international caps and his role in supporting Mickey van de Ven. The defender also plays his club football at Manchester City.
Valentijn Driessen said he found Aké’s inclusion incomprehensible and would have preferred Jorrel Hato. He reminded that Koeman has already left out Valente and Smit, so Hato could have been given a chance.
Driessen argued that Hato would have gained his first World Cup minutes, acknowledging the youngster would feel nervous but stay sharp. He contrasted this with Aké, who runs around due to his routine and experience.
The discussion aired on De ’s Kick‑off podcast and was revisited on Studio Oranje after the Dutch victory.
