EA SPORTS FC 27 breaks tradition with PEGI 16+ rating
When the official trailer for EA SPORTS FC 27 dropped on Thursday, the game’s release date of 25 September was confirmed, and for the first time in the franchise’s history the title received a PEGI 16+ rating, marking a notable shift in its age classification.
The new football title follows a long tradition of being suitable for all ages, a hallmark of the series. Until now, each edition has been rated for very young players.
EA SPORTS FC 27 will launch on 25 September across the major consoles and PC. The simultaneous worldwide release ensures fans everywhere can access the latest edition.
In June, PEGI revised its classification guidelines, assigning a 16+ rating to new titles that feature microtransactions. This rule change directly influences the rating given to EA SPORTS FC 27.
The decision ends the series’ long‑standing all‑age suitability. Earlier FIFA‑branded editions were given a minimum age recommendation of three years.
The higher rating is primarily linked to the game’s ability to allow real‑money purchases. Micro‑transactions are now a core component of the title’s monetisation.
The popular Ultimate Team mode, where players assemble squads and can buy special player cards with virtual coins or real money, played a key role in the rating. This mode’s in‑game shop exemplifies the micro‑transaction element highlighted by PEGI.
Historically, sports games have almost always received low age classifications. A PEGI 16+ rating has traditionally been reserved for titles containing violence, strong language or other adult themes.
