FIFA hands Themba Zwane three‑match ban after World Cup red card
FIFA confirmed a three‑match ban for South African attacking midfielder Themba Zwane after his straight red card in the World Cup opener, a 2‑0 defeat to Mexico. The disciplinary action stems from a breach of Article 14 of FIFA’s code following an incident in which Zwane struck Mexican player Alvarado in the face.
Zwane entered the game in the 15th minute of the second half. He was shown the red card in the 38th minute after the altercation with Alvarado.
The match was officiated by Brazilian referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio. Sampaio also sent off a second South African player during the same fixture.

Coach Hugo Broos called Zwane’s dismissal “excessive”. Broos argued the incident resulted from the opponent’s block rather than deliberate aggression. The South African federation is considering an appeal against the suspension. If upheld, Zwane will miss the remainder of the group stage and will only be eligible for a possible round‑of‑16 match.Betfred offers first-half goal boost for Mexico vs South Africa
The ban also means Zwane would miss any playoff‑round game should South Africa progress beyond the groups.
