Frenkie de Jong injury doubt for Sweden clash as Koeman defends selections

Frenkie de Jong faces a fitness test ahead of the Netherlands' match against Sweden. The Barcelona midfielder sustained a pelvic injury during a training collision involving Quinten Timber, who suffered a mild concussion. Ronald Koeman confirmed in Houston that doubts remain over De Jong's availability for the fixture. "There is slight doubt whether Frenkie can start against Sweden," Koeman said. "He has partially trained but Quinten stumbled and collided with him." The Oranje head coach also addressed criticism of his substitutions against Japan. "The impact of my substitutions was not good and that is my responsibility," Koeman stated. "You must take all the criticism like a big boy." He admitted the changes failed to improve the team's performance. De Jong remains central to Koeman's plans despite public debate in the Netherlands about his role. "I completely disagree that he should be substituted," Koeman said. "After the Japan game I spoke with him. Frenkie does many things well; he is tactically intelligent." However, Koeman acknowledged room for improvement in De Jong's forward positioning. "When we attack and the team needs to press higher, he often takes up a deeper position. His forward actions need work, but removing him goes too far." The Oranje head coach reflected on broader tactical issues following the Japan defeat. "There were moments we retreated too far," Koeman noted. "Against Sweden, we may need even more pressing from our three attackers given their style." Koeman stressed the urgency of the Sweden match for qualification. "We know what we must do and do not want to leave everything to the final game," he said. Quinten Timber's concussion adds to Oranje's injury concerns ahead of the fixture. The AZ Alkmaar defender remains in the squad but his availability is uncertain.
