Germany to face third‑placed side in Boston on June 29

Germany, led by coach Julian Nagelsmann, will meet a third‑placed team from Groups A, B, C, D or F in Boston on June 29 after winning Group E with victories over Curaçao and Ivory Coast. The narrow win over Ivory Coast secured six points, guaranteeing the top spot. Curaçao, making its World Cup debut, suffered a clear defeat. Ivory Coast pushed Germany to the limit, resulting in a very narrow victory. Even if Germany were to lose their final group match, the head‑to‑head rule would keep them ahead of Ivory Coast. Both teams would finish on six points, but Germany’s win over Ivory Coast gives them the advantage. FIFA’s knockout‑stage draw involves 495 possible combinations for the eight best third‑placed teams. Third‑placed sides are ranked in a separate table after the group stage. At present, Germany could face any of 15 different opponents in the round of 16. The most probable opponents are expected to come from Group C or Group D. If the third‑placed team from Group C qualifies, Scotland or Morocco would be the likely challengers. A clash with Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazilian ball artists is also considered realistic. In Group D, Australia or Paraguay may finish third and earn a spot among the best third‑placed teams. Both nations remain in contention for the knockout round. Group F could contribute the Netherlands, Sweden or Japan as the third‑placed representative. Each of these teams is still mathematically able to finish third. The exact opponent will be confirmed once all group matches are completed and the eight best third‑placed teams are identified. If Germany advances, France could await them in the round of 16.
