Gravenberch turns Oranje fortunes around after EK snub

Ryan Gravenberch has undergone a remarkable transformation in the Dutch national team shirt. At the previous major tournament, UEFA EURO 2024 in Germany, he was among five Oranje players who did not feature in any minutes. His status has since surged, and at the FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States he has been a standout performer. The 22-year-old midfielder started all five matches for the Netherlands at the World Cup, delivering two assists. His performances have drawn widespread praise, with Dutch media highlighting his composure and physical presence in midfield. Gravenberch’s rise coincides with a strong club season at Liverpool FC, where he has featured prominently under Jürgen Klopp. His displays for both club and country have cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders. The contrast between his EK 2024 experience and current standing could not be starker. During the European Championship, he was limited to the bench, but at the World Cup he has been a key figure in the Dutch setup. His two assists at the World Cup came in the group stage against France and in the round of 16 against the United States. Both contributions were crucial in securing Dutch progression in the tournament. Gravenberch’s progress has not gone unnoticed by national team observers. Former Oranje coach Ronald Koeman described his World Cup performances as "mature beyond his years" during a post-match interview. At club level, Gravenberch has made 28 appearances for Liverpool FC this season, scoring three goals and providing four assists in all competitions.
