Hedwiges Maduro says Ryan Gravenberch is now 'so good'
Hedwiges Maduro praised Ryan Gravenberch after the Dutch midfielder's strong display against Sweden, highlighting his newfound freedom and effectiveness at Liverpool. Maduro described Gravenberch as playing in his natural position, moving from a six‑role to an eight‑role, and said he is now 'so good'.
Gravenberch featured for the Netherlands national team in the match versus Sweden, delivering a performance that caught Maduro's attention. The former Ajax and Valencia player noted the midfielder's impact on the game.
“Ik vind hem sowieso geweldig spelen”, Maduro began, adding that Gravenberch now truly plays in his position. “Hij speelt nu wel echt op zijn positie. Bij Liverpool speelt hij meer op de zes-positie, en nu speelt hij meer als acht. Dan zie je ook wel weer dat hij dat frivole heeft.”
Maduro continued, observing that Gravenberch can create actions, turn away, and arrive on the flank, reminiscent of his time at Ajax under Erik ten Hag. He emphasized that the player appears completely free on the pitch.
Hans Kraay commented that Gravenberch’s first season at Liverpool saw him used similarly to his current role. Kraay added that this season the club has effectively made him a primary playmaker in midfield.
“In het eerste seizoen speelde hij bij Liverpool meer zoals hij nu speelt”, Kraay said. “Dit seizoen hebben ze hem eigenlijk tot eerste aanspeelpunt gemaakt, als middenvelder. Ik heb altijd het idee, maar dan ben ik misschien een zeikerd, dat Frenkie de Jong naar voren toe een aanspeelpunt mist wanneer Gravenberch naast hem staat. Als hij daar vijftien meter voor staat, kan Frenkie hem ook vooruit aanspelen. Ik denk dat dat voor de opbouw beter is.”
