Italy's federation halts Andrea Pirlo talks over Russian gambling link

Initial optimism turned to disappointment as Italy’s football federation reversed its course on Andrea Pirlo’s appointment, citing the former midfielder’s link to a Russian gambling firm. While a reported agreement had raised hopes last week, political and societal pressure forced the FIGC to abandon the deal.

Italian media reported last week that the FIGC had reached an agreement with the former world champion to become national team coach. The story suggested a swift transition from player to head of the Italian side.

The federation later announced it would halt negotiations because of Pirlo’s connection with the Russian gambling company Fonbet. Former midfielder Andrea Pirlo had the backing of technical director Paolo Maldini during the process. Nevertheless, mounting political and societal pressure proved decisive in the decision.

The contrast between the early optimism and the abrupt cancellation underscores how off‑field concerns can outweigh sporting considerations. The FIGC now faces the task of finding a new candidate for the Italy job.
