Jan Paul van Hecke completes €60m Tottenham move, stays focused on World Cup

Dutch centre‑back Jan Paul van Hecke confirmed his €60 million transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion to Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, just days before the Netherlands face Sweden in the World Cup group stage. The move was announced at a press conference in the Oranje camp. Speaking at the press conference, Van Hecke said, "I can say it does not affect me. It is something to be proud of." He added that the transfer will not change him as a person, insisting he will remain "just JP." Van Hecke’s former clubs NAC Breda, SC Heerenveen, VV Goes and Jeugd Voetbal Opleiding Zeeland will receive sell‑on percentages or training compensation from the deal. VV Arnemuiden, the club where his senior career began, is also set to benefit financially. He was asked whether he would allocate part of the fee to his youth club, prompting him to reply, "I am thinking about that, but one must always be careful with such statements." Van Hecke emphasized his pride in making the step to a top club, noting that it boosts his confidence ahead of the tournament. "You get the chance to play for a top club," he said, adding that the move reinforces his readiness for the World Cup. The Netherlands coach granted him the freedom to complete his medical examination, and Van Hecke confirmed that the process has not disrupted his preparation for the Sweden match. He reiterated his focus on the World Cup, describing the tournament as the biggest in the world and expressing enthusiasm to be part of it.
