Koeman confirms De Jong fit enough to start vs Sweden
Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman gave a fitness update on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong before the team's second 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Sweden, confirming the captain will start despite not being at 100 percent. Koeman said the Dutch side believes De Jong is in good enough shape for the game.
De Jong, who captains Barcelona, was named in the starting eleven despite recent abdominal discomfort that had raised doubts about his readiness. The Dutch coach retained him in the lineup after assessing his condition in the days leading up to the Sweden clash.
Koeman explained, “I don’t think he’s 100% but he’s in good enough shape for us to have him start the match. We still have the warm‑up period to make sure of that.” The manager added that the team will monitor De Jong during the pre‑match preparations.
He also noted, “You keep in mind the possibility that he might not be able to start, but this isn’t a concern. Of course, you want to field the best and strongest lineup from our point of view in the match. This is something that can happen in football.” Koeman stressed that the decision aligns with the Dutch side’s tactical priorities.

The Netherlands entered the Sweden game having failed to win their opening World Cup encounter against Japan, leaving them in need of all three points. Securing a victory against Sweden is therefore crucial for their tournament hopes. A photograph by Michael Steele shows De Jong on the pitch as the Netherlands line‑up takes shape. The club’s medical staff are aware of the Dutch midfielder’s involvement in the World Cup fixture.
