Koeman pleased with 5-1 win over Sweden, sees room to improve
Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman expressed satisfaction with his side’s 5‑1 victory over Sweden in the World Cup group stage, while acknowledging that the team still has areas to improve. He recalled the earlier 2‑2 draw with Japan that left pressure on the squad.
Koeman reminded his players that “you want to win the first match at a World Cup”. He emphasized that the Sweden encounter was a World Cup group duel.
“There was some pressure today, because you don’t want it decided only in the last round of matches,” Koeman said. He explained the pressure stemmed from not wanting the outcome decided only in the final round.

“We did a lot of moments very well,” he continued. Yet he added that despite the 5‑1 scoreline, the team sometimes took too long to recognise when opponents changed their play. “But despite 5‑1 you also see that it takes us too much time to recognise when they play differently. It’s a fine victory, a fine result. But there were enough moments where we say: that can be better,” Koeman remarked.Netherlands thrash Sweden 5-1 at World Cup with Brobbey and Gakpo goals
Koeman praised Brian Brobbey, who earned his trust and scored two goals. “A great start of the match, that gives confidence,” he added.
