Leeds United's £20m bid for Southampton's Shea Charles rebuffed

Leeds United have opened their summer transfer window with a £20 million offer for Southampton’s 22‑year‑old Northern Ireland midfielder Shea Charles, but Southampton instantly rejected the proposal and indicated they will only consider a significantly higher fee, leaving the clubs in ongoing negotiations.

Journalist Jacob Tanswell announced on X that Southampton instantly rebuffed Leeds United’s opening £20 million proposal for Shea Charles. The South Coast club said it will only consider a significantly higher premium before entertaining an exit.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke is steering the pursuit, insisting his side needs genuine steel in the midfield engine room. He has identified Charles as his primary target to help avoid future relegation battles.

Charles, a former Manchester City academy graduate, has seen his stock soar after a stellar individual campaign. That form has pushed his realistic market value well north of the baseline figure Leeds initially offered.

Leeds officials believe they can stretch the package to £25 million, arguing they hold leverage in the negotiation. Rival clubs are watching, and any hesitation could see another team hijack the deal.

On 10 February 2026, Charles celebrated his fourth goal for Southampton alongside teammate Ross Stewart in a Sky Bet Championship match against Leicester City at The King Power Stadium. The moment was captured by photographer Michael Regan for Getty Images.

Despite the rebuff, dialogue between Leeds United and Southampton continues, indicating the transfer is not dead. Both clubs remain engaged as negotiations progress.
