Lionel Messi becomes majority shareholder of CD Eldense in D2

Lionel Messi, the 39‑year‑old Argentinian, will become the majority shareholder of CD Eldense, a Spanish D2 club, according to AFP. Published on 10‑09‑2026 at 12:33, updated at 12:34, the statement says the deal is part of the player's investment strategy, already a shareholder of football club UE Cornellà since April.

The spokesperson for CD Eldense confirmed that Lionel Messi has reached a principle agreement with the TH Soluciones group to acquire their shares, which would make him the majority shareholder. “The deal remains subject to the completion of the final legal and contractual steps as well as the approval of the Superior Sports Council,” the spokesperson added, within the context of foreign leagues, without disclosing financial details.

This stake follows the purchase, in April, of the Tercera Federación club UE Cornellà, playing in the fourth division, marking the Argentine's first foray into Spanish football.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has been playing for Inter Miami since 2023, where his contract provides for an entry into the MLS club's capital after his retirement. He announced at the end of August his international retirement, after Argentina's loss in the World Cup‑2026 final against Spain.

The completion of the acquisition of CD Eldense will depend on the legal formalities and the approval of the Superior Sports Council, opening the debate on the legality of owning two Spanish clubs simultaneously. The statement was published without specifying the amount.
