Liverpool pay €40m for Victor Munoz as Gakpo eyes Tottenham

Liverpool have completed the €40m signing of Spain and Osasuna winger Victor Munoz, while Cody Gakpo is being linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur after stating he will not remain a squad player. At the same time Mohamed Salah departed on a free transfer following the termination of his £400k‑per‑week contract, and Federico Chiesa is expected to follow him out of the club. Sporting director Richard Hughes confirmed the deal as his first of the summer, noting that the 22‑year‑old Munoz prefers playing on the left but can also operate on the right. Liverpool’s preference for a right‑winger and plans to add Yan Diomande suggest the former Real Madrid youth will mainly feature on the left. The left‑wing position is already congested, with Cody Gakpo favouring the role and Rio Ngumoha also earmarked for more first‑team opportunities next season. Gakpo has expressed a desire for a key role, and new coach Andoni Iraola is unlikely to provide the guaranteed playing time he seeks. A TEAMtalk report quoted a 27‑year‑old Gakpo saying, “He has no desire to spend the prime years of his career as a squad player.” The same source added that Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi has entered talks with Liverpool, with the club assessing Gakpo against long‑term target Savinho. Salah’s exit was confirmed as a free transfer, with his £400k‑per‑week contract ripped up by mutual agreement. Italian clubs, including former Juventus side, have shown interest in bringing Federico Chiesa back to Italy. The arrival of Hugo Ekitike from his Achilles injury will further limit top‑wing opportunities for Gakpo, as Liverpool appear well stocked in that area. This adds pressure on the Dutch international to seek a move elsewhere. If a suitable bid emerges, Liverpool are expected to sell Cody Gakpo, ending speculation about his future at the club.
