Lorient’s midfield rebuild hinges on Gabin Bernardeau bid

🇫🇷
FC Lorient are seeking to reinforce a midfield void left by the departure of captain Laurent Abergel, whose contract was terminated on Tuesday. The Breton club have therefore turned their attention to 20‑year‑old France U20 midfielder Gabin Bernardeau. Abergel’s exit creates a vacancy in Lorient’s central area as he moves back to OGC Nice. His contract termination was announced by Lorient on Tuesday, and he is expected to sign at Nice. Bernardeau, who joined Nice on a free transfer from Le Mans FC last summer, has featured in only eight matches across all competitions this season at the Allianz Riviera. The France U20 international is therefore eager for regular playing time next season, a prospect that may not be guaranteed at Nice. In the previous campaign with Le Mans in Ligue 3, he logged 30 league appearances, scoring three goals and providing eight assists. Those numbers underline his potential to contribute offensively from midfield. Luke Entwistle reported that Lorient have submitted a formal bid for Bernardeau, according to Ouest‑France. If the offer is accepted, the midfielder could complete his move to the Moustoir this summer. Nice have yet to confirm whether they will retain Bernardeau or facilitate his transfer. Should the deal proceed, Lorient will need to integrate him quickly to replace Abergel’s departing influence.
