Maduro favors Malen over Brobbey for big‑match striker role
Former Dutch international Hedwiges Maduro argued today at 14:49 on Studio Oranje of VoetbalPrimeur that Donyell Malen could be a better striker than Brian Brobbey for the Netherlands when facing top‑ranked opponents. The remarks came after the Oranje secured a group‑winner victory over Tunisia.
Maduro questioned whether Malen is the right choice as striker against top nations, saying: “Of Malen tegen toplanden wel de juiste keuze is in de spits? Misschien wel, omdat je dan meer in de omschakeling gaat spelen.” The comment was made during the Studio Oranje broadcast.
He noted that at AS Roma Malen already plays in that manner, adding: “Bij AS Roma speelt hij eigenlijk al zo, hoewel Brobbey ook snel is.” This highlighted that Brobbey is also quick.
Maduro further observed that “Malen gaat nog sneller diep.” indicating Malen penetrates deeper at a faster pace.
He cautioned, however, that “als Brobbey zich zo blijft ontwikkelen, wil je hem ook vertrouwen blijven geven.” and concluded “Er is eigenlijk geen reden om hem eruit te halen.” suggesting no reason to drop Brobbey.
The discussion was part of the latest Studio Oranje episode, aired after the Netherlands, as group winners, defeated Tunisia. Viewers were invited to watch the episode immediately.
