Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Both teams received red cards before the final whistle. The ceremony featured performances by Shakira and Burna Boy, a flag parade on the pitch and the singing of national anthems. Kick‑off occurred just after 21:00 Dutch time, launching the first of 104 matches. Raúl Jiménez fired a shot four minutes in, which South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams saved. Sphephelo Sithole lost possession in his own half, allowing Julián Andrés Quiñones to score the tournament’s first goal. After the break, Sithole tackled Brian Gutiérrez and was shown a red card. Jiménez later headed the second goal from a pass by Roberto Alvarado. Alvarado was then sent off after a VAR‑reviewed challenge by Themba Zwane, with referee Wilton Sampaio explaining the decision. César Montes also received a red card for bringing down Khuliso Mudau. The match concluded with Mexico winning 2-0.
