Michael Spellman departs Newport County after contract refusal

Michael Spellman, 23, has left Newport County after rejecting a new contract. He joined the Exiles in July 2024 from Sunderland, having previously been on loan at Whitby Town and Blyth Spartans. Spellman scored seven goals across two seasons, five of which came in the most recent campaign. He netted twice in a 3-1 win over Tranmere Rovers in March that lifted Newport out of the relegation zone. An injury later that month curtailed his involvement, confining him to substitute appearances. The midfielder, who was named supporters' player of the season, is the third key departure following winger Bobby Kamwa and captain Matt Baker. Kamwa and Spellman together contributed roughly 20% of Newport's attacking output last season. Manager Christian Fuchs now faces a rebuild ahead of the 2026–27 season. Newport County confirmed it remains in talks with defenders Cameron Evans, Ciaran Brennan and Keenan Patten as the club seeks to avoid a fourth consecutive season at the lower end of League Two.
