Milan fights misinformation as Baresi’s health battle continues
On Wednesday evening AC Milan issued an official statement refuting viral social‑media club legend and honorary vice‑president Franco Baresi, 66, had died, confirming he is alive and currently receiving significant treatment following the pulmonary‑nodule surgery he announced in August 2025.
Social media users shared messages claiming the former defender had passed away at 66, and the unfounded posts spread quickly, prompting AC Milan to act. The juxtaposition of the viral death hoax with Baresi’s ongoing health battle underscored the urgency of the Club’s communication.
The Club’s statement read: “AC Milan denies the false reports concerning Franco Baresi that have begun circulating in recent minutes.” It added: “Franco is going through a difficult and delicate time, and the Club stands firmly alongside him and his family.” The direct quotes convey the Club’s firm denial and supportive stance.
AC Milan also urged supporters to respect his privacy and refrain from spreading unfounded information. Fans were asked to allow the family space during this delicate period. The appeal emphasizes the need for responsible fan behaviour amid sensitive personal circumstances.
Baresi publicly disclosed in August 2025 that he had undergone surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule. He confirmed the procedure was successful and that he had started a course of immunotherapy. He said treatment was ongoing, providing clarity on his medical condition.
His playing career was spent entirely with the Rossoneri, rising through the youth academy. He made 716 competitive appearances between 1977 and 1997, scoring 33 goals and providing 24 assists. He never played for another club, illustrating his deep‑rooted connection to Milan.
During his tenure he collected three Champions League trophies, six Serie A titles, two Intercontinental Cups, three European Super Cups and four Supercoppa Italiana victories. These honours cement his status as a club icon.
Since October 2020 he has served as honorary vice‑president of Milan, after earlier coaching roles within the club’s youth academy. In December 2024 he was inducted into the AC MILAN Hall of Fame alongside Filippo Inzaghi and Marco van Basten at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza before the Serie A match against Genoa. The induction highlighted the club’s recognition of his legacy even as he faces health challenges.
The Club reiterated that it will continue to stand by Baresi as his treatment proceeds and asked supporters to respect his privacy throughout the ongoing recovery.
