Rafael Leão scores in 2026 World Cup, joins 2022 tally

Rafael Leão netted for Portugal in the 2026 World Cup match against Uzbekistan in Houston, becoming the only player to score in two separate World Cups, after previously finding the net in Qatar 2022. He came on late in the second half and scored within minutes, echoing his 2022 goals against Ghana and Switzerland. In Houston, against Uzbekistan, Rafael Leão entered the match in the final minutes and immediately scored for Portugal. Head coach Roberto Martínez praised the strike, noting Leão’s value as an extra weapon in the squad. During the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Leão came on in the 77th minute of the 3‑2 win over Ghana on 24 November 2022. Three minutes later he curled a right‑footed shot into the far corner to make the score 3‑1. In the subsequent group game against Switzerland in December 2022, Leão replaced Bruno Fernandes in the 87th minute. He dribbled past Granit Xhaka, cut inside and fired a curling effort past goalkeeper Yann Sommer in the 92nd minute, sealing Portugal’s 6‑1 victory. These goals mean Leão has scored in two different World Cups, a feat he now repeats in 2026. The only major tournament trophy still missing from his résumé is a European Championship title. Portugal’s next challenge comes on Sunday 28 June in Miami against Colombia, where a win would guarantee first place in the group. The match will be the final group fixture of the 2026 World Cup for both sides. Off the pitch, AC Milan has launched its 2026/27 home kit, featuring the club’s traditional colors. Fans can purchase the new jersey online as the season approaches.
