Romelu Lukaku says he is over 50% fit after draw with Iran

After the Rode Duivels' disappointing draw against Iran, striker Romelu Lukaku gave a candid update on his physical condition, saying he feels he is “above the half” of his full fitness but still short of 100 percent, and confirmed he started the match. Lukaku has endured a difficult season marked by various physical setbacks. He also experienced long periods without regular match rhythm. He admitted it is hard to judge his exact fitness level, but stated, “I am in the starting lineup and I am certainly above the half.” He added that he is still far from 100 percent but feels he can help the squad. Lukaku described his recovery as a marathon rather than a sprint, insisting he does not want to skip steps. He said the Iran match was a good test that gives him confidence for the future. Before the game he was unsure how his body would react, expecting a fifty-fifty outcome. He explained that he was mentally prepared to assist the team and ultimately felt good on the pitch. When asked about returning to his absolute top level, Lukaku replied confidently, “I feel good.” He added, “If I didn’t feel good, I wouldn’t be doing this.” Lukaku, alongside goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, stressed that the Rode Duivels must focus fully on the upcoming group match against New Zealand. He urged the team to lock in, stay concentrated, and treat the final game as the match of their lives. After missing two chances to win, the Rode Duivels now have only one task left. Lukaku said, “We had two chances to win and we didn’t take them. Now we have one chance. We must grab it.”
