Ron Vlaar says Netherlands defence remains solid after 2-2 draw with Japan

Former defender Ron Vlaar defended the Netherlands national team’s defensive performance, saying it has been “very solid” in recent years despite the 2-2 draw with Japan at the World Cup. He stressed there is no reason for panic after the match. Vlaar said the defensive base has always been good, describing the Dutch side as “very solid” in recent years. He added that such solidity does not disappear instantly. He noted that conceding goals “out of nowhere” is frustrating for the players. Vlaar advised they should “count to ten” and analyse the situation calmly. Vlaar observed that after the Netherlands led 1-0 there was “no problem in the air” before Japan equalised. He pointed out that Japan then gained possession deep in the Dutch half. He criticised the Dutch side for allowing “much too long” ball possession because they applied no pressure. Vlaar said the lack of pressing gave Japan space to create chances. Vlaar highlighted Keito Nakamura’s strike from the edge of the penalty area that restored parity. He called the goal “simple to prevent” and urged the Dutch defence to address such moments in future matches.
