Ronaldo’s brief splits Portugal, coach accused, media demand peace

While Cristiano Ronaldo in a letter accuses the Portuguese national team coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice, the same message moves the national press. Ronaldo explains why he left Portugal’s training camp, but continues to press for a place in the squad.

Ronaldo accuses coach

In the letter Ronaldo states that Jesus broke his word twice, which he says was the reason for his departure. He acknowledges his own mistake and says he must be punished, but emphasizes that CR7 still wants to remain available for the national team.

Ronaldo admits that the relationship with Jesus has taken a heavy blow, but he continues to make himself available for Portugal. He hopes that, despite the tensions, a way can be found to end his international career at a respectable level.

Media demand reconciliation

The Portuguese press reacts with bewilderment to the letter and calls for burying the hatchet. National newspapers argue that it is wise to end the feud and de‑escalate the situation.

Former international António Simões, bronze medal winner at the 1966 World Cup, gets a platform in O Jogo. He says: “It is better that they seek each other out and make peace, instead of keeping the war going.” Simões adds that, if there are conditions, Cristiano should be welcome.

He continues: “We do not have to agree with Cristiano, but if he has acknowledged his mistake, let us give him the chance for a farewell that is worthy of his status.” At A Bola there is also outrage about the presence of Simão Coutinho, sporting director of Al‑Nassr, at the talks between Ronaldo and Jesus.

The sharp contrast between Ronaldo’s personal outrage and the press’s call for reconciliation underscores a crisis within the national team. How the federation responds will determine whether the Portuguese squad can still form a united front in the coming weeks.
