Sparta leads race for Ajax defender Nick Verschuren
Sparta Rotterdam have moved to secure the signing of 21‑year‑old defender Nick Verschuren, who is on loan from Ajax Amsterdam. According to transfer journalist Mounir Boualin, Sparta hope to outbid FC Groningen after the Dutch defender impressed during a season‑long loan at FC Volendam.
Verschuren spent the 2023‑24 campaign on loan at FC Volendam, a club that suffered relegation that season. Despite the team’s drop, his performances earned him strong praise from supporters.
Volendam fans even voted him Player of the Year at the end of the campaign. The accolade highlighted his impact despite the club’s overall struggles.
Earlier reports indicated that FC Groningen had already expressed interest in acquiring Verschuren. Sparta’s renewed pursuit now adds a competitive dimension to the transfer market.
Boualin wrote that Sparta ‘seems to have the best papers’ in the race for the defender. He added that the Rotterdam side appears poised to secure the player if negotiations progress.
Ajax Amsterdam retain the player’s registration and will decide on a permanent move. Both Sparta Rotterdam and FC Groningen await Ajax’s final decision on the transfer.
