Sweden beat Tunisia 5-1 in World Cup opener

Sweden defeated Tunisia 5-1 at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico on Sunday night in the World Cup 2026 opener. Yasin Ayari scored twice for Sweden. Sweden took a 2-0 lead within the first 30 minutes. Ayari opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a deep shot. Alexander Isak doubled the advantage after breaking down the left flank. Omar Rekik headed Tunisia's first goal just before the break. In the second half, Viktor Gyökeres restored a two‑goal cushion with a 59th‑minute strike after a defensive error. Mattias Svanberg added a goal on his first touch, confirmed after a replay. Ayari completed his brace with a long‑range effort in the final minutes. The win puts Sweden atop Group F, aided by the Japan‑Netherlands draw earlier in Dallas. Sweden will face the Netherlands on Saturday, while Tunisia must beat Japan to stay in contention.
