Theo Janssen shuns top‑level licence, stays at De Treffers

Today, former Netherlands international Theo Janssen, a five‑time cap holder, told VI‑Inside Oranje that he has no intention of obtaining the coaching licence required for the highest level while he remains the head coach of De Treffers in the Tweede Divisie. He emphasized his satisfaction with his current role and the level at which his club competes.

When asked whether he aspires to coach at the top tier, Janssen replied, "No, not necessarily," adding that many Dutch coaches pursue the course despite a surplus of five hundred trainers and only a handful of clubs offering paid‑football positions.

Janssen explained that if a professional club approached him, he would consider the opportunity, but only after completing the necessary licensing pathway; he does not actively seek out such offers.

He likened a possible scenario to a young player who secured a move to De Graafschap, saying, "If a club wants me, they will come to me, and we can talk about it," indicating a similar openness to adventure.

The former player of FC Twente, Vitesse and Ajax now leads De Treffers, where he oversees the squad in the Tweede Divisie, a competition he describes as enjoyable and competitive.

Janssen highlighted the close proximity between the Tweede Divisie and the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, noting that his side could defeat many clubs from the higher tier based on the quality of play.

Speaking to VI presenter Wilfred Genee, Janssen stressed a simple coaching philosophy: "You must not make it harder than it is. Focus on the right colour, give the best players the ball and freedom," underscoring his belief that over‑complicating tactics adds little value.
