Tottenham open direct talks with Newcastle for Sandro Tonali

Tottenham Hotspur have opened direct negotiations with Newcastle United for Italy international Sandro Tonali. The Premier League clubs have progressed from initial discussions with the midfielder’s representatives to direct contact over a potential transfer. Spurs are moving quickly to secure the 25-year-old before Manchester City finalise their own approach. Tottenham have already agreed personal terms with Tonali, according to reports. The midfielder’s representatives confirmed positive talks with Spurs in recent weeks, but Newcastle have yet to engage in formal discussions. The Magpies place a £100 million valuation on Tonali, whose contract with Newcastle runs until 2029 with a one-year extension option. Manager Roberto De Zerbi is understood to be a key factor in Spurs’ interest. The Italian coach’s connection with Tonali is seen as a major advantage in the pursuit. Tonali’s preference for London living and financial incentives are also cited as potential motivators for a move. Signing Tonali would strengthen Tottenham’s midfield ahead of the new season. The club remains interested in West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes but has prioritised Tonali’s recruitment. Manchester City remain active in the race, increasing competition for the box-to-box midfielder. Tonali made 53 appearances across all competitions during the 2025/26 season. Newcastle’s openness to offers meeting their valuation has created a pathway for a potential blockbuster deal. Spurs aim to finalise terms before the transfer window intensifies. Tottenham’s pursuit follows earlier discussions with Tonali’s representatives. The club’s urgency reflects their ambition to rebuild the squad’s spine. A successful deal would mark one of the summer’s most significant transfers.
